Forward Danilo Gallinari has been diagnosed with a torn ACL in his left knee, the Celtics confirmed Friday.
Gallinari sustained the injury during a FIBA World Cup qualifying game on Aug. 27 and was initially believed to have a meniscus tear. Reports stated that initial tests showed there was no ligament damage and that the ACL was stable, but clearly that wasn’t the case.
The 34-year-old missed the 2013-14 season with the same injury.
Boston signed Gallinari to a two-year, $13.3 million deal back in July. Last season with the Atlanta Hawks, Gallinari averaged 11.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists and shot 38.1 percent from 3-point range across 66 games (18 starts).
In 13 NBA seasons, the 6-foot-10 forward is averaging 15.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 728 career games (563 starts). He is shooting 38.2 percent from behind the arc and has netted 1,426 3-pointers, which ranks 49th all-time.
